Rodolfo J. Oviedo, MD, FACS, FASMBS

Rodolfo J. Oviedo, MD, FACS, FASMBS obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Long School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2007. He then graduated from Houston Methodist Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical College General Surgery Residency Program after his Chief Resident year in 2013.

Subsequently, he joined the ranks of teaching faculty at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, FL, as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery, where he worked as a minimally-invasive general and bariatric surgeon from 2013 to 2017. It was during this period that he began to develop his skills as a robotic surgeon.

Dr. Oviedo then decided to pursue an Advanced Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at Baptist Health South Florida in Miami, FL, from 2017 to 2018. He took a position as a metabolic and bariatric surgeon at Valley Health Metabolic & Bariatric Program at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA, where he built a successful robotic bariatric and complex abdominal wall reconstruction program from 2018 to 2020.

Dr. Oviedo is a board-certified and fellowship-trained metabolic and bariatric surgeon, robotic advanced gastrointestinal surgeon, and flexible endoscopic surgeon. His areas of expertise include robotic primary and revisional metabolic and bariatric surgery, robotic complex abdominal wall reconstruction, robotic anti-reflux/foregut surgery, flexible endoscopic surgery, and interventional bariatric endoscopy.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery (DABS), a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), and an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in London, UK. Dr. Oviedo is certified by the BE-SAFE program by ASMBS and SAGES to perform Interventional Bariatric Endoscopy. He is certified in FUSE, FES, and FLS, and serves on multiple committees at ACS and SAGES. Dr. Oviedo has written numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.

Including his Tallahassee, Miami, Winchester, and San Antonio experience, Dr. Oviedo has completed close to 1,000 successful robotic surgeries to date. He has proudly joined Texas Bariatric Specialists in San Antonio, TX, since 2020.
