Gastric Bypass Beats Diabetes Over Long Term

Gastric bypass surgery for weight loss can also rid patients of diabetes and decrease cardiovascular risks in the long run, researchers found.

At 6 years, diabetes remission rates were significantly higher among surgery patients than among controls who went without treatment (62% versus 8% and 6% in control groups, P<0.001), Ted Adams, PhD, MPH, of the University of Utah, and colleagues reported in a special obesity-themed issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Remission rates for hypertension, low HDL cholesterol, high LDL cholesterol, and high triglycerides were also significantly higher for surgery patients at that time point, they reported.
