Why Weight Loss Surgery as compared to Weight Loss Programs?

Weight loss is very personal. There are many emotions involved with losing weight and many temptations to not follow a strict weight loss program of diet and exercise. This is especially difficult in a place like San Antonio. For some, it gets to a point where the task of losing weight feels like an insurmountable goal.

Most weight loss programs require eating less calories and exercising more. Like most people, you have probably lost 10 or 20 lbs before, but then started slipping. This up and down weight loss pattern is common. Frankly, conventional weight loss is difficult for many, especially if you’re significantly overweight. This is why weight loss surgery in San Antonio is so prevalent.

Weight Loss Surgery Options

Common surgical procedures are Gastric Sleeve (also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy and Lap Sleeve), Gastric Bypass, Stomach Intestinal Pylorus-Sparing surgery, and Lap Band.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

The advantage of the Gastric Sleeve surgery which is also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, Sleeve Gastrectomy and Lap Sleeve, is that the restriction is not as dramatic as seen in the Lap Band or the Gastric Bypass.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric Bypass surgery involves creating a smaller stomach and shortening the digestive tract. This is a more permanent surgery and can require more recovery time compared to the sleeve.

Stomach Intestinal Pylorus-Sparing Surgery (SIPS)

SIPS involves creating a sleeve and also bypassing half of the small intestine.  SIPS is able to combine many benefits of both the gastric bypass and the sleeve. It often delivers more weight loss and higher resolution rates of comorbidities, such as diabetes.

Lap Band Surgery

Lap Band surgery is performed by placing an adjustable band around the stomach. The band size is adjusted according to the desired food intake, which is decided by you and your surgeon. You will lose weight slower on the lap band, however it is reversible. Resolution rates of comorbidites are lower compared to the options listed above.
